Un livre de plus sur l’école, direz vous… En ces temps d’incertitude scolaire, le nouveau livre de Claire L’Hoër « Bonnet d’âne et Palme d’or », m’a fait l’effet d’une claque revigorante. Ancré dans mes certitudes, j’étais persuadé que la droite voulait le naufrage de l’école publique, et qu’elle avait organisé sa destruction par l’asphyxie financière. Professeur d’histoire en lycée depuis quinze ans, Claire L’Hoër remet les pendules à l’heure : non tout n’est pas qu’une question de moyens ; non les élèves ne sont pas des bons à rien ; non ce n’est pas par un retour en arrière que nous construirons le système scolaire dont nous avons besoin. Chaque page de son livre démontre à quel point le monde a changé, en décalage total avec le système d’enseignement, et comment la France du XXIème siècle ne peut offrir à ses enfants l’école de Jules Ferry avec ses bonnets d’âne, ses lignes à recopier, son tableau noir et ses traditions. 68 a été un tournant décisif, puis la création du collège unique. Cette fois, il ne s’agit ni d’un virage ni d’une énième réformette. Le lycée a besoin d’un vrai coup de Karcher. Mais qui osera tenir la lance à eau ? Xavier Darcos ne semble pas disposer de la carrure nécessaire. Richard Descoings l’aura-t-il davantage ? Réponse dans les mois à venir…

When I read comments like this I truly wonedr if the commenters read the article. The article is NOT about me; I have it all precisely BECAUSE I am a tenured professor and thus have the flexibility to control my own time that so many women (and men who are fully engaged parents) lack. As you point out, leaving a top job after two years is not surprising; that is the expected tenure for an academic. And indeed, if I had just come home without more, there would have been no need to write the article. The two factors that motivated me to write, as I explain in the piece, are 1) the negative reaction, particularly among women my age or older, to any suggestion that I might be putting my kids ahead of a career choice (to be promoted); and 2) the very strong reaction among 25-odd Rhodes Scholars, the most accomplished women of their generation, to my willingness to be honest about the trade-offs (thank goodness you didn't give another B.S. you can have it all talk. The piece is written to propose solutions BOTH to change the way we react as a culture when women make trade-offs in favor of family (and I make very clear that I am aware of how privileged my demographic is that we have any choices at all); and to change the workplace so that many, many more women and their fully engaged parenting partners can stay on their career tracks, even if at a slower pace, long enough to stay in the pool to be considered for leadership positions. I don't know Joan Johnson-Freese, but I admire her as a woman of accomplishment one who has managed to make it to the top and have a family. As I point out, more of us managed to do that in academia than any other profession precisely because of the flexibiliyt academia allows. But Professor Johnson-Freese has exactly the reaction of the colleague I refer to at the beginning of the article we KNOW how hard it is but we are not about to admit it to the next generation because we will give men an excuse not to hire women and we will discourage younger women from following in our path. But younger women are seeking a different path, which is why I am now mobbed by women wherever I go, particularly those between 25 and 35, grateful for my candor and determination to make change. It would have been far easier to rest on my academic and professional laurels and keep silent, precisely for the reasons you mention re being known now on this issue rather than for my life work on foreign policy. But I want to see the promise of feminism delivered that women should have an EQUAL chance to have BOTH career and family as men do. And for that we need another round of change. If we are not honest (in public, not just in private) about the realities we face, how on earth do we expect to change them?
